Zakah on Shares

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A questioner says: He has shares in one of the banks, and more than three years have passed since he acquired them. Are the shares subject to zakah?

Answer:
Answer: Shares differ; if they are shares for buying and selling, where he sells them and buys others in their place, dealing in shares and trading in shares, their ruling is the ruling of goods for trade. If a lunar year has passed on their value at which he bought them, he appraises them at their current worth and pays one-quarter of a tenth of that value. However, if the shares are for investment, meaning fixed shares that he invests in through their production and they remain fixed and he does not sell them, then he pays zakah on the income he receives from them.
