Zakah on Shares

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner says: “O Shaykh, I have shares in one of the banks, and more than three years have passed over them. Are the shares subject to zakah?”

Answer:
Answer: Shares differ: If the shares are for buying and selling, meaning he sells them and buys others in their place, dealing in shares through trading, then their ruling is the ruling of goods for trade. If a lunar year has passed over their value at the price he bought them for, he must appraise them at their current value and pay one-quarter of a tenth of that value. As for shares held for investment, meaning fixed shares he invests in through their production, and which he does not sell, he must pay zakah on the income he receives from them.
