Question:
Faith according to the People of the Sunnah and the Community: It increases and decreases; and what is its definition?

Answer:
Answer: Faith, according to the people of the Sunnah and the community, is speech with the tongue, belief in the heart, and action with the limbs. It increases with obedience and decreases with disobedience. As for its increase, the evidence is the saying of Allah the Exalted: ( *And when a surah is revealed, some of them say, "Which of you has this increased in faith?" As for those who have believed, it has increased them in faith, and they rejoice* ). Thus, it increases faith. And Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: ( *And Allah will increase those who have guided in guidance* ). And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: ( *The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts become fearful, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith, and in their Lord they place their trust* ). These proofs indicate that faith increases. As for the decrease of faith, the evidence is the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Faith has seventy-odd or sixty-odd branches, the highest of which is the declaration that there is no god but Allah, and the lowest of which is removing a harmful object from the road, and modesty is a branch of faith." And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart, and that is the weakest of faith." In another narration: "And there is no faith behind that except the weight of a mustard seed." This indicates that faith increases and becomes complete, and decreases until nothing remains of it except the amount of a mustard seed or less. This indicates the increase and decrease of faith. It indicates that faith increases and becomes complete, and decreases until no mustard seed remains of it, or less than that, indicating the increase and decrease of faith.
