Question:
How should one interpret the verse in which He, Blessed and Exalted is He, said: “Do not grieve, for indeed Allah is with us”? What is the meaning of this presence, and how is it divided?

Answer:
Answer: This occurred in the Cave of Thawr when the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companion Abu Bakr hid there. As they were in the cave, he said to his companion: “Do not grieve, for indeed Allah is with us” [Surah al-Tawbah 40]. This was when the polytheists came in search of them and stopped at the entrance of the cave. Abu Bakr, fearing for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), said: “O Messenger of Allah, if one of them were to look at the place where his foot is, he would see us.” He said: “O Abu Bakr, what do you think of two, when Allah is the third?” At that moment, Allah took the sight of the polytheists, so they did not see the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and his companion, even though they had stopped right above them in the cave. This is from the power of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). The presence of Allah with His creation is of two types. The first is a general presence, meaning encompassing and being aware. This is a general presence for the disbeliever, the believer, and all created beings, for Allah encompasses them, sees them, hears them, and knows them (Glorified and Exalted is He). The special presence is the presence with the believers through victory, support, protection, and guardianship. “Do not grieve, for indeed Allah is with us” is this special presence. He, Exalted and Majestic is He, said to Musa and Harun: “He said: Do not fear, for indeed I am with you both, hearing and seeing” [Surah Ta-Ha 46]. This is a special presence for the believers among the prophets, the messengers, and their followers.
