The Student of Knowledge

Question:
What do you advise the student of knowledge regarding the acquisition and pursuit of sacred knowledge, and what guidance do you have for them in this matter? May Allah reward you.

Answer:
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. As for what follows: Seeking knowledge is among the greatest acts of worship, for acts of worship must be built upon knowledge. This is the evidence found in the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger: acts of worship have conditions, rulings, obligations, and recommended practices. A person must learn from these to the extent that his religion is established. Knowing the five pillars of Islam, which establish his religion, is an individual obligation (fard 'ayn) for every Muslim. What goes beyond that, such as the rulings of transactions, bequests, and inheritance, etc., is a collective obligation (fard kifayah). If a sufficient number of people fulfill it, the sin is lifted from the rest. It is reported regarding the virtue of seeking knowledge that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The scholars are the heirs of the prophets." It is also reported: "The angels spread their wings for the student of knowledge, and everything seeks forgiveness for the student of knowledge, even the fish in the sea," due to the virtue of seeking knowledge. However, knowledge is taken from trustworthy scholars in their creed and their knowledge, generation after generation. For knowledge is acquired through transmission, not through reading. Reading many books is not learning; rather, it may mislead a person more. Knowledge is acquired through transmission from the original, trustworthy scholars, generation after generation. Knowledge is a great matter that is taken from its people, not from those who pretend to be scholars, and not from books. It must be taken from the divine scholars (al-'ulama al-rabaniyyin), generation after generation.
