Question:
We would like to ask Your Eminence about the interpretation of the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) in Surat al-Imran: (Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your reward on the Day of Resurrection. So whoever is kept away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has succeeded. And the life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion.)
Answer:
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. When Allah mentioned in this surah, Surat al-Imran, the news of the Jews and the Christians and their stubbornness against their prophets, and finally their disbelief in Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the Seal of the Prophets and the Leader of the Messengers, Allah (Glorified is He) said in this verse: (Every soul will taste death), meaning that they have a term that awaits them, from which they cannot escape, and after which they will be transferred to their recompense in the Hereafter, according to what they brought of disbelief, denial, and heinous matters. They are not going to escape, but rather they have an appointment that awaits them, which is inevitable. (Every soul will taste death), so no one among the created beings will escape this. (And you will only be given your reward on the Day of Resurrection. So whoever is kept away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has succeeded), meaning he has been saved. This is not like the claims of the Jews and the Christians that they are the chosen people of Allah, that they are the people of faith, and that those other than them are upon nothing. These are wishes that will vanish on this Day, when every soul faces what it has done! It will wish to return to the world to rectify what has passed, but it will not be enabled to do so. Rather, it is recompense. The world is a place of action and no recompense, whereas the Hereafter is a place of recompense and no action. (And you will only be given your reward on the Day of Resurrection. So whoever is kept away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has succeeded). (So whoever is kept away) means kept distant from the Fire, (and admitted to Paradise has succeeded), meaning he has been saved. (And the life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion), it deceives its owner. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) forbade His servants and said: (So let not the life of this world delude you, and let not the deceiver delude you regarding Allah). So He (Glorified is He) forbade being deluded in this worldly life and forgetting the Hereafter, and He mentioned that this Day is coming for everyone, no one will escape from it, and what follows it is the abode of permanence, the abode of recompense, and the abode of action has ended. So let the servant beware of this appointment, and let him prepare for it before it overtakes him. Let him prepare for it with righteous deeds and repent from sins and evil deeds. This will keep him away from the Fire and distance him from it, and admit him to Paradise, because in the Hereafter there is nothing but the abode of Paradise and the abode of the Fire (may Allah protect us from it). There are two abodes, and there is no escape from them. So let the servant be alert to this Day and this meeting, and let him do good deeds, repent from evil deeds, and leave the evasions by which the People of the Book were afflicted: (And the Jews said, "The Christians are upon nothing," and the Christians said, "The Jews are upon nothing"). So the matter is not about wishing, or purifying one's soul with lies, but rather the matter is about seriousness and truthfulness, and about fulfillment and completeness. And recompense is of the same kind as the deed. And may Allah grant success and guide to the straight path.
