Explanation of the beginning of the obligation of fasting

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q234: The questioner asks: When was fasting made obligatory in Islam, and how
many Ramadans did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fast until he passed away (peace and blessings be upon him)?

A234: Fasting was made obligatory in the second year of the Hijrah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted nine Ramadans; because he lived in Madinah for ten years, and it was made obligatory in the second of them, so (peace and blessings be upon him) fasted nine Ramadans.
