Fatwa No. ( 18084 )
Q1: Toothpaste contains types of sugars, which a person tastes while using it. It is known that tasting food in its natural form occurs when the substance being tasted dissolves in the saliva, then penetrates the taste receptors. If it dissolves in the saliva, it is most likely that a person cannot avoid swallowing it.
A - Is it permissible for a fasting person to use toothpaste? It is known that he can use the brush alone. B - What is the ruling on mouthwash medicines (gargling)? C - It has been established with a good chain from Ibn Abbas (Al-Irwaa 937) that he (may Allah be pleased with him) saw no harm in a fasting person tasting honey, ghee, or the like, and then spitting it out. Similarly, this was reported from some of the Salaf. So, after knowing the method by which food is tasted, what is the ruling on a fasting person tasting food ?
A1: There is no harm in using toothpaste while fasting, but one must spit out what dissolves in the mouth. If something goes down his throat without intention, it does not harm him. Likewise, there is no harm in using mouthwash containing medicines, on the condition that he spits it out and does not intentionally let anything of it go down his throat. Similarly, tasting food is not a problem, on the condition that he spits it out and does not swallow it.
