The third question of Fatwa No. ( 19477 )
Q3: Donating blood in the blessed month of Ramadan: A - Does donating blood in the morning of Ramadan break the fast of the person fasting, especially given that donating blood does not affect the fasting person, and he is able to carry on his daily life in a very normal way? B - Does donating blood in the morning of Ramadan break the fast if the donor faints as a result of the donation? These fainting episodes are rare, and their cause is a lack of blood in the brain, which necessitates raising the donor's legs up and lowering his head until he regains consciousness, without this having a negative effect on the donor; rather, they are very ordinary cases. C - There is another type of blood donation, which is donating one of the blood components and returning the unneeded components to the donor's body. This method, which is new of its kind, is called: (Apheresis). A high-tech machine draws a limited amount of blood from the donor, then immediately separates the blood components from one another. The required components, such as blood plasma and platelets, are taken, and the red and white blood cells and other blood cells are immediately returned to the donor's body, along with the addition of a chemical substance to the amount returned to the donor. This substance is an anticoagulant, which enters the donor's body with the blood cells as mentioned. This process is repeated (4 - 5) times over a period of approximately one hour, during which the donor rests on the machine until the procedure is completed, the required amount of blood cells is drawn, and the rest is returned to the donor. Does this type of blood component donation break the fast of the Muslim who is fasting? It is known that this method puts less strain on the donor's body
The donor is positioned with their head lower than their feet until they regain consciousness, without this having a negative effect on the donor; rather, these are very ordinary cases. C. There is another type of blood donation, which is the donation of one of the blood components and the return of the unneeded components to the donor's body. This substance is an anticoagulant, which enters the donor's body with the blood cells as we mentioned. In fact, this process is repeated (4 - 5) times over a period of approximately one hour, during which the donor rests on the device until the completion of this method, the extraction of the required amount of blood cells, and the return of the remainder to the donor. Does this type of blood component donation break the fast of a Muslim who is fasting? Knowing that this method puts less strain on the donor's body.
than regular blood donation.
A3: Donating blood breaks the fast of the person fasting; because it is in the meaning of cupping, and it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Likewise, the person to whom blood is transfused breaks his fast by doing so. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
