Fasting the Day of Ashura and Differing from the People of the Book

Q: It is mentioned in the hadith: , so how does this reconcile with his command to differ from the People of the Book in many matters?
A: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) first arrived in Madinah , he liked to agree with the People of the Book in matters for which nothing had been revealed to him. Then Allah prescribed for him to differ from them, so he commanded his Ummah to do so. Among these matters is fasting the Day of Ashura. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 1134b meaning along with the tenth. It is also narrated from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Bulugh al-Maram 5:41 .
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

لئن عشت إلى قابل لأصومن التاسعAbu Hurairah, narrated that The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “None of you should fast on Friday, unless he fasts together with the day before or the day after.” Agreed upon.
خالفوا اليهود صوموا يومًا قبله أو يومًا بعدهAnd success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
