Q: I inform you that I was part of the Kingdom's army participating in the war
in Palestine in the year 1368 AH, and we spent a long period there. The blessed month of Ramadan passed us, and I do not remember currently whether I fasted this month or whether I made it up if I did break my fast . After this long period, I met one of the people who was with us there, and he informed me that we did not fast at that time, and I found that he was making up that month. Since, as I mentioned to your eminence, I do not remember whether I fasted or not, and I do not know whether the making up was completed or not. The question here is: What is obligatory upon me regarding the fasting of this month and making it up, and given that I am currently an elderly man suffering from diabetes, and I am unable to fast to make up what I mentioned, and as I repeat my lack of knowledge of whether I made it up or not, I ask your eminence to inform me about this, and what is obligatory upon me?
A: It is obligatory upon you to make up the fast; because you are not certain that you fasted, and the original state is that the fasting remains in your liability, especially since your companion informed you that you both did not fast. And along with making up the fast, you must feed a poor person for each day for the delay, in the amount of one and a half kilograms of food. And if you are unable to make up the fast now on a continuous basis due to a chronic illness, then you must pay the ransom in place of making up the fast, which is feeding a poor person for each day in the amount we mentioned. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
