Making up the fasts of the postpartum woman, the pregnant woman, and the nursing woman for what they missed of Ramadan

The first question of Fatwa No. ( 16136 )
Q1: My grandmother, my father’s mother, entrusted me with this question and placed it in my trust to ask on her behalf. She says: I gave birth to a daughter in the blessed month of Ramadan, about forty years before today. From that day until now, I have not been able to make up the fasts due to the distractions of worldly affairs and ignorance of religious matters. When I became more knowledgeable about religious affairs and their obligations, I found myself shortcoming in not having made up that previous month. I am now about eighty years old and, praise be to Allah, in good health. My question is: Is it permissible for me to make up that month now after such a long period, or not? If the answer is yes, is it fasting only, or fasting and feeding? And if the answer is fasting and feeding, is the feeding at the end of each day’s fast, or at the end of the month?
A1: It is obligatory for your grandmother to make up the number of days of the month of Ramadan that she missed, along with repentance to Allah the Exalted and feeding one poor person for every day she makes up.
The amount is half a sa’ (a dry measure of about 3 kg), which is one and a half kilograms of the staple food of the country, due to her delay in making up the fasts. It is permissible for her to give the food before fasting or after, all at once or in installments; there is no harm in that, even if it is given to a single poor person. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
