The ruling on the traveler praying behind the resident imam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q516: The questioner, Abd al-Rahman from al-Ta'if, asks: A traveler prayed behind a resident imam and caught the third and fourth rak'ahs with him. Should he say the closing salam with him, or should he stand up to make up the first two rak'ahs? May Allah reward you with good?
A516: It is not permissible for him to say the closing salam from the fourth rak'ah; rather, he should say the salam with the congregation. He must complete the prayer with four rak'ahs. When he says the salam, he stands up and performs two rak'ahs along with the two rak'ahs he caught with the congregation, so that his prayer is completed with four rak'ahs. And
one who follows a resident imam does not shorten the prayer, for it is obligatory for him to complete it, or he follows one for whom it is obligatory to complete it, following the imam. This is the Sunnah.
