The sixth question of Fatwa No. ( 18672 )
Q6: It is reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the 'Aqiqah sacrifice for himself at the time of his mission. Is this statement correct? And is it permissible for a man to perform the 'Aqiqah sacrifice for himself if his father did not perform it for him?
A6: It is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the 'Aqiqah sacrifice for himself at the time of his mission. The 'Aqiqah sacrifice for a newborn is a recommended practice (sunnah) and not obligatory. It consists of two sheep for a male child and one for a female child. The conditions considered for the 'Id sacrifice (udhiyah) are considered for it. It is better to slaughter it on the seventh day, but if it is slaughtered on another day before or after that, it is sufficient. If a person performs the 'Aqiqah sacrifice for himself, even if he is an adult, it is good if his father did not perform it for him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
