Is it prescribed to perform the 'aqiqah for an elder for whom it was not performed?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : ... We slaughtered an 'aqiqah, and I have children with me.

The Shaykh : You have children? What do you mean?

The questioner : I have children.
The student : ... .

The questioner : An elder by age... I slaughtered an 'aqiqah, and I slaughtered one for my mother. My mother asked for it later... she asked for an 'aqiqah, so I slaughtered one for her.

The Shaykh : This is also a recommended practice (sunnah) that is more neglected than the sunnah of the 'aqiqah. That is, if a young man learns from his father that he did not perform the 'aqiqah for him, and his father has passed away to the mercy of Allah, it is from the sunnah for him to perform the 'aqiqah for himself. We do not say it is obligatory (wajib) upon him; it is from the sunnah. This is following the example of his Prophet (peace be upon him). Indeed, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) received the prophethood, he performed the 'aqiqah for himself. So if a Muslim performs the 'aqiqah for himself, he has the example of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). This is the reality: these are sunnahs that are not known in most Islamic countries; they have become forgotten.

The questioner : One more thing.

The Shaykh: Go ahead.
