The 'Id sacrifice on behalf of the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 16040 )
Q: I inform Your Eminence that I offer the 'Id sacrifice on behalf of my father, who passed away more than twenty years ago. Since I heard from one of the brothers that it is disliked to offer a sacrifice exclusively for a deceased person, and given Your Eminence's knowledge, I offer a sacrifice on behalf of my deceased father and brothers, and a sacrifice on behalf of my household?
A: The sacrifice on behalf of a deceased person is prescribed; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed on behalf of those of the Ummah of Muhammad who had not sacrificed, and this includes the living and the dead. Jabir reported:
I prayed 'Id al-Adha with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he finished, a ram was brought to him and he slaughtered it, saying: In the name of Allah, Allah is the Greatest. O Allah, this is on my behalf, and on behalf of those from my Ummah who did not offer a sacrifice.صليت مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم عيد الأضحى، فلما انصرف أتي بكبش فذبحه، فقال: باسم الله والله أكبر، اللهم هذا عني، وعمن لم يضح من أمتي
It was narrated by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and al-Tirmidhi. Also, the Commander of the Faithful, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, sacrificed on behalf of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after his death. Hansh al-San'ani said:
I saw Ali sacrificing two rams and asked him the meaning of it. He replied, “God’s Messenger enjoined me to sacrifice on his behalf, so that is what I am doing.”رأيت عليًّا رضي الله عنه يضحي بكبشين، فقلت له: ما هذا؟ فقال: إن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أوصاني أن أضحي عنه، فأنا أضحي عنه
Mishkat al-Masabih 1462
. It was narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi. The one who says that one does not sacrifice on behalf of a deceased person has no evidence to prevent that; so his opinion is the weaker position and is not acted upon.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
