The 'Id sacrifice on behalf of the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: What is the ruling on the 'Id sacrifice? Is it permissible to perform it on behalf of a deceased person?

Answer: The 'Id sacrifice is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah) according to the majority of scholars; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sacrificed, and he encouraged his community to sacrifice. The original ruling is that it is sought in its proper time from a living person for himself and his family, and he may share its reward with whomever he wishes from among the living and the dead.
As for the 'Id sacrifice on behalf of a deceased person, if he bequeathed it in a third of his wealth, for example, or established it as an endowment (waqf) for him, it is obligatory for the one managing the endowment or the bequest to carry it out. If he did not bequeath it, nor establish an endowment for it, and a person wishes to sacrifice on behalf of his father, mother, or someone else, that is good, and this is considered one of the types of voluntary charity (sadaqah) on behalf of the deceased. Charity on behalf of the deceased is prescribed (mashru') according to the people of the Sunnah and the community (Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah).
As for giving charity with the price of the 'Id sacrifice, based on the view that this is better than slaughtering it: if the 'Id sacrifice was explicitly specified in the endowment or bequest, it is not permissible for the agent to deviate from that to giving charity with its price. However, if it was voluntary on behalf of another, the matter is broad in that regard. As for the 'Id sacrifice on behalf of a living Muslim and his family, it is a confirmed recommended practice (sunnah) for one who is able to afford it, and slaughtering it is better than giving charity with its price. And success is from Allah.
