Taking medication during the day

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 19132 )
Q: I have suffered from depression and severe mood disorder for more than 13 years. I take some sedative pills, and the number of pills has increased until it now reaches 10 pills at night, in addition to diabetes medication and some electric shock sessions, because the body has now developed immunity to the pills. I do not sleep except for about two hours each night after taking the pills, then I spend the night awake, suffering from insomnia, wakefulness, and restlessness. Now, with the approach of Ramadan, the timing of the pills will change, and there will be hardship as happened to me last year. Fasting has caused me a lot of fatigue and exhaustion. Some students of knowledge have issued a ruling for me to break the fast and feed the poor. Now, I am unable to fast without sleep or rest. I ask your Eminence to guide me to the correct course, and I hope the answer will be written on paper so that it may serve as proof for my children or anyone who thinks ill of me. May Allah protect you and reward you with good.
A: If the situation is as described and you are unable to fast because you need to take medication during the day, and this illness continues with you throughout the year, then you break the fast and feed one poor person for each day, half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg), which is one and a half kilograms by weight of the staple food of the country, such as rice or otherwise. We ask Allah for your healing and well-being.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
