Q2: My mother has been suffering from kidney failure for nine years, and the month of Ramadan passes while she undergoes dialysis to purify her blood . She goes to the hospital three times a week, on Saturday, Monday, and Wednesday. The dialysis is performed via a line using two needles, and this breaks the fast if one is fasting. Nine Ramadans have passed over the course of nine years, and she did not fast the days on which she undergoes dialysis. When the month of Ramadan ends, she pays expiation for the days she fasted without making up this fast, because she goes to the hospital three times every week. What should she do, even though nine Ramadans have passed? And does she bear sin because she paid expiation for every day and did not make up the fast? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you with good.
A2: If the matter is as described, it is obligatory for her to make up the days she did not fast from the previous months of Ramadan. The making up must be in order, so she fasts the days she missed from the first month, then the second, and so on.
She must feed a poor person for each day of delaying the making up, and the amount is one and a half kilograms of wheat, rice, dates, or other staple food of the people of the country; due to the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:185] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
