Praise be to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the honorable Director of the Dawah and Guidance Center in Najran , which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, under number (4313) on 21/8/1412 AH, regarding the wife of (S. S. Sh.) who is suffering from kidney failure. The letter stated: “His wife is suffering from kidney failure and is being treated at the General Hospital in Najran , and she is unable to fast as he mentioned. We asked the aforementioned person to attach a medical report on the patient’s condition from the hospital where she is being treated, so we are attaching to Your Eminence the required report sent to us by the Najran General Hospital regarding the patient’s condition, hoping for your guidance to the aforementioned person regarding the Shari'ah ruling concerning
whether his wife should fast or not. The attached medical report also states that the patient suffers from chronic kidney failure, and the patient undergoes hemodialysis three times a week, with each session lasting four hours.
After the Committee studied the inquiry, it answered that the aforementioned patient should break her fast on the days of kidney dialysis and on the days without dialysis if fasting is difficult for her. She should then make up all the days after Ramadan if she is able to do so. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
