Fatwa No. ( 19851 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner: the Head of the Nephrology Department at the Riyadh Medical Complex, Dr. Fahd ibn Ahmad al-Kanhal , which was referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (5315) and date 27/8/1418 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is as follows:
We have a number of patients with advanced kidney failure. This disease, according to what is known about its nature, is not expected to be cured. One of the necessary therapeutic methods to keep the patient alive is: continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis . This method involves implanting a permanent artificial tube in the patient’s abdominal wall, through which a fluid is injected into the abdominal cavity four times a day, i.e., every six hours. The solution contains salts, sugar, and water, meaning that these components are a form of food. The function of this solution is to draw out excess fluids and toxins from the body, which a healthy kidney would have done. Some of these components may be absorbed into the blood from the peritoneal membrane lining the abdomen, and not through the stomach. The question is: Is it permissible to continue with this method in Ramadan, i.e., during the daytime of Ramadan? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with the best reward.
A: If the situation is as described, then this purification procedure invalidates fasting. If it is not possible to postpone it to the night and the illness is not expected to be cured, then this patient must feed one poor person for every day with a quantity of one and a half kilograms of food in place of fasting. However, if a cure is expected, then he must make up the fasts after he recovers.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
