The sick person for whom fasting is harmful: it is better for him to break the fast and make it up when able

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 18449 )
Q5: I am a sick man, and the doctor has forbidden me from fasting . This doctor is a Muslim and prays with us in the mosque. So, should I follow his advice? I am aware that I cannot refrain from water for more than two hours. And if I do not fast, should I feed a poor person for each day through charitable organizations or the Islamic Relief Agency, specifically in the "Feeding a Fasting Person" project? Is that sufficient? Please inform us, and may you be rewarded.
A5: If the situation is as described, it is better for you to leave off fasting; because of the clear benefit in that and the removal of hardship and difficulty from you; due to the presence of the legal excuse, which is illness. And you must make up the obligatory fasting after recovery. There is no feeding required of you in this state. However, if you despair of recovery or of the ability to make it up, then making it up is dropped from you, and it is obligatory for you to feed one poor person for every day you did not fast, or give him half a sa' of wheat, rice, dates, or the like, of what the people of the country eat as their staple food. The poor and needy are many in every place. And if you find trustworthy people to whom you entrust the feeding on your behalf, there is no blame on him
if Allah wills. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
