Fatwa number ( 16120 )
Q: I had surgery during the month of Ramadan and stayed in the hospital until the end of the month. How do I make up the fast? And if I do not make up this fast before another Ramadan arrives, how do I make it up in both cases?
A: There is no harm in breaking the fast in Ramadan due to an illness that makes fasting difficult for you, or one that prevents you from fasting. If you are able to make up the fast, you must make up the days you broke, even if it is after another Ramadan; because you are excused for delaying the make-up. Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:286] , and He the Exalted said: [Al-Baqarah 2:185] ,
However, if the delay extends to the second Ramadan without an excuse, then you must repent for that, along with making up the fast and feeding one poor person for each day as expiation for the delay until the second Ramadan. This is half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of the country, which amounts to one and a half kilograms, to be given to the poor, even if it is to just one poor person. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
