Fasting for the one whom fasting harms
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 2924 )
Q: II was afflicted with a kidney diseaseand one of my sons donated a single kidney to me. Ramadan has passed, and the doctor supervising the operation forbade me from fasting. The operation is still recent, and the doctor says it is dangerous for me if I fast, regarding the formation of urine and the continuous need for cold water, because this kidney was newly transplanted. Therefore, I ask Allah, then your Eminence, to inform me what I should do regarding the fasting I missed, and whether I am obligated to make it up or give charity? Especially since I am unable to fast while in this condition. May Allah preserve you and protect you.
A: If the situation is as you described, it is prescribed for you to break your fast as long as fasting harms you or causes you difficulty. You must make up the fasting of Ramadan that you missed when you are able to fast, even if that is after a year or several years. If your inability to fast continues and you do not expect to be able to fast in the future, it is obligatory for you to feed one poor person for every day you broke your fast in Ramadan, giving them half a sa' of wheat, rice, or the like of what you feed your family. By doing so, the obligation to make up the fast is lifted from you.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
