Fatwa number ( 14525 )
Q: I have a sister who has a husband, and since this husband has cancer, may Allah protect us and you from it, and since he underwent surgery before Ramadan and was very ill from this disease both before and after it, in this year 1411 AH. He passed away after Ramadan – may Allah grant him spacious Paradise – and he did not fast Ramadan of this year. The question is: How much is to be fed on his behalf for each day, is it a sa' or more or less, and is rice sufficient in place of wheat or must it be wheat, and is it to be fed in one day or according to the days of the month, each day with its day? And since
the one for whom his wife (my sister) is feeding on his behalf, and he has small children and daughters, and since he has two wives, one is my sister and the other is from my community, and he has debts, we ask for an answer to this question.
A: If the illness of your sister's husband continued from before Ramadan until his death, then there is no making up of fasts upon him and no expiation; because he was excused in Ramadan by the illness, and he was not able to fast after Ramadan due to the continuation of his illness until his death. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
