Bleeding outside the usual days: Does it prevent fasting?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 20114 )
Q1: My wife fasted the six days of Shawwal, but she experienced bleeding. However, this blood was not her menstrual period; it was due to the contraceptive pill. Is the fasting permissible ? I hope for your guidance.
A1: If this blood that your wife saw was not during her usual days and did not have the characteristics of menstrual blood, then it is considered bleeding caused by the intake of contraceptive pills. Its ruling is the same as the ruling for irregular non-menstrual bleeding (istihadah). In this case, she has the ruling of a woman in a state of purity, meaning it is permissible for her to pray and fast, and it is permissible for her husband to have intercourse with her, and so on. However, she must perform the ablution for prayer (wudu') for every prayer after its time has entered, following cleaning herself after relieving herself. Accordingly, the fasting she performed during the six days of Shawwal is valid and sufficient for her. However, if the bleeding occurred during her usual days, it is considered menstruation. It is not permissible for her to fast or pray, and it is not permissible for you to have intercourse with her until she becomes pure from it
and performs the full ritual bath (ghusl). Any fasting performed during that time is not valid and does not suffice for her regarding the fasting of the six days, because it was revealed to be menstrual blood. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
