The questioner : A woman stopped her menstrual period during the month of Ramadan, and after several days from its expected time, intermittent blood appeared that is not like the blood of the usual period, and she is now taking a full ritual bath, fasting, and praying. Is her fasting and prayer valid, and what is required of her if her prayer and fasting are not valid?

The Shaykh : If the blood that is coming out is menstrual blood that she recognizes by its color, smell, thickness, and pains, then it is menstruation, even if the purity between it and the first period was short. However, if it is blood that does not fit the characteristics of menstruation, then it is irregular non-menstrual bleeding, which does not prevent her from prayer or fasting. The scholars mentioned that there are three signs of menstrual blood: the smell is foul, the color is black, and the consistency is thick. Some contemporary scholars mentioned a fourth sign, which is that menstrual blood does not clot, whereas blood that is not menstrual does clot. This sign is added to the three previous signs.
