The questioner : Work circumstances may bring us together with those who have the following characteristics: the first is a man who professes the religion of the Majus, having absolutely no connection to Islam; the second is one who professes one of the heavenly religions that were abrogated by Islam; the third is one who denies the religions; and the fourth is one who professes Islam and believes in it, but at the same time does not practically apply the five pillars of Islam, despite having the ability to do so, and leaves them off automatically without a valid legal excuse. Add to this that he calls for aid and seeks help from other than Allah. My question is: given that our work circumstances are unified in one office, they exchange greetings with us at times, and we sometimes exchange greetings with them. Also, one of these people may die, and from a humanitarian standpoint, due to our collegial relationship, we are required to attend the mourning ceremonies, including the funeral prayer, burial, and condolences. What is the ruling of Islam in all of this? Please inform us; may Allah reward you with good?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
We advise this brother and say to him: You should seek a job that does not include any of the enemies of Allah and His Messenger, those who profess a religion other than Islam. If that is facilitated, that is what you should do. If it is not facilitated, there is no blame on you, because you are in your work and they are in their work, but on the condition that you do not have affection, love, or loyalty for them in your heart, and that you adhere to what the Shari'ah has prescribed regarding greeting them, returning the greeting, and the like.
Likewise, do not follow their funeral processions or attend them, except if dire necessity calls for it, such as if no one is available to bury them. In that case, there is no blame on you if you bury them. However, if one of their awliya (close friends of Allah) is present to do so, you do not attend their funerals, because the believer must consider what pleases Allah and His Messenger. Allah and His Messenger have more right to be pleased with them, if they are believers.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
