The ruling on praying in mosques adjacent to graveyards
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q185: The questioner from the Republic of Sudan says: In the direction of the mihrab of the mosque where we pray, there are graveyards. What is the ruling on praying in these mosques? And what is the ruling on building a mosque if there is a grave in the direction of the mihrab?
A185: If the grave or graves are attached to the mosque and there is no separation between them, then it is not permissible to pray in this mosque; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade praying at graves, and forbade making graves into mosques: that is, places of prayer, and forbade building mosques on graves, and cursed whoever did so; because this is a means to shirk (associating partners with Allah). But if the graveyards are separated from the mosque in any direction, such as there being a street between them, or a road, or open land, then there is nothing wrong with that; because the mosque is isolated from the graves, and there is a separation between them.
