The Ruling on Praying in a Mosque That Contains Graves

Question:
We move on to another question sent by a listener named Fath al-Rahman Ali Saleh, a resident of the Kingdom. From his handwriting, it appears he is Sudanese, and indeed he is. He says: We have a mosque in Sudan, and it is the only mosque in the village. Inside its enclosure, or within it, there are five graves. I asked some scholars, and some said: It is not permissible to pray in it, while others permitted it. We ask for your guidance. May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In all mosques that contain graves, prayer is not performed; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed those who did so. He said:Sahih Muslim 529, and he said—(peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 532 So he forbade them from making graves into mosques, and making them into mosques by praying in them. Indeed, whoever prays on the ground has made it a mosque. He said—(peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Ibn Majah 567Sahih (Darussalam), so it is not permissible for a believer to pray in a mosque that contains graves, even if it is only one grave. It is not permissible for Muslims to do this. Rather, it is obligatory for them to have their graves outside the mosques, in separate cemeteries, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did in Madinah. He did not bury people in the mosques. The cemetery is known separately at al-Baqi'.
And so it is with Muslims everywhere; the cemeteries are separate and independent. It is not permissible to bury in the mosques, and it is not permissible to build mosques over graves either. Neither this nor that is allowed. A mosque is not built over a grave, and a dead person is not buried in a mosque after the mosque has been built. Neither this nor that is allowed.
It is obligatory that graves be outside the mosques, and not inside the mosques. Every mosque that contains graves is not prayed in, and the prayer in it is not valid; because this involves imitating the Jews and the Christians in their ugly deeds. For this reason, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed those who did this. This indicates the invalidity of the prayer, because when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) criticized them, blamed them, and cursed them for this action, it indicated its invalidity. We ask Allah for safety. Yes.

لعن الله اليهود والنصارى اتخذوا قبور أنبيائهم مساجدBeware of those who preceded you and used to take the graves of their prophets and righteous men as places of worship, but you must not take graves as mosques; I forbid you to do that.
ألا وإن من كان قبلكم كانوا يتخذون قبور أنبيائهم وصالحيهم مساجد، ألا فلا تتخذوا القبور مساجد، فإني أنهاكم عن ذلكthe earth has been made for me a place of worship and a means of purification.
جعلت لي الأرض مسجدًا وطهورًاAnd so it is with Muslims everywhere; the cemeteries are separate and independent.
