A sum collected by employees for the canteen: is zakah due on it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 15275 )
Q: We inform Your Eminence that we are the purified canteen committee in the Diplomatic Quarter Security Force in Riyadh . We are tasked with deducting a specific monthly amount from each individual and officer among the force's personnel, according to their wishes and in accordance with the orders and directives from the competent authorities. We submit these
amounts for the purified canteen, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner for all personnel of the force. It happens that financial amounts remain at the end of each month, and sometimes there is a shortfall. In the case of a surplus, these amounts are deposited into the canteen fund as a balance, from which is spent when necessary. When the amount grows and reaches a certain level, we stop the deduction of amounts for a month, for example, and spend from this balance. Our question, O Shaykh: Is it obligatory for us to pay zakah on this amount that enters the canteen fund as a balance if a lunar year passes over it ? We request your guidance so that it may be a rule we follow, and may Allah preserve you.

A: If the share of each individual reaches the nisab and a lunar year passes over it, zakah becomes obligatory. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
