Giving Zakah to an Employee
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 17650 )
Q2: When I take my annual leave, I buy some clothes
and distribute them as gifts to my family, brothers, relatives, neighbors, and friends. They are all employees whose salaries come from the state, and their financial situation is either average or below average. I consider this part of my wealth's zakah, and then I complete the zakah of my wealth in cash and distribute it to those among them who are in need, as well as other people in the town who are in need. Is this correct from an Islamic perspective or not? Please inform me of this.
A2 : It is permissible to give zakah to an employee if his income is not sufficient for him, and he is given from it the amount that suffices him. It is also permissible to buy his necessities with it and give them to him if that is better than giving him money, provided he is among those to whom it is permissible for you to give your zakah. However, if he is among those from whom you pay their maintenance from your own wealth, namely your father, your mother, your paternal and maternal grandparents, however far up the line, and your descendants, namely your children and your children's children, however far down the line, whose maintenance is obligatory upon you, and likewise your wife and anyone else you provide for, then it is not permissible to give your zakah to them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
