He has wealth for which he has not paid zakah and wants to get rid of it

Fatwa number ( 14261 )
Q: I have been saving what Allah provides me from my salary and other income for many years, until the money with me reached the nisab for zakah. This money increased with me as the days passed, but I did not pay the zakah that Allah has made obligatory upon me from it. I thought to use this money to build a mosque for Allah voluntarily, seeking His mercy and pleasure. I actually built the mosque, and the work is still ongoing to this day. Is it obligatory for me to pay zakah from this money despite having spent it in the cause of Allah, or is zakah not obligatory on me? Please inform us, may Allah have mercy on you and forgive me and you, and may peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you.
A: It is obligatory for you to pay the zakah on the wealth you saved for the previous years if it reached the nisab at the completion of each lunar year. As for the money you intended for building the mosque, zakah is not obligatory on it from the time of the intention. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
