Zakat on Pigeons
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18207 )
Q: I am a man who owns hundreds of pigeons with the intention of making them a source of income. However, whenever they produce offspring, I sell them and spend the proceeds on my house. By the end of the year, I find no cash other than the pigeons themselves, which fly everywhere and gather in the tower at night. I am now confused about how to pay zakat on these pigeons . Please advise us, may Allah reward you with good.
A: Pigeons kept for the production and sale of their offspring are not subject to zakat. However, if you have a sum of money from the sale of their offspring that reaches the nisab and a lunar year has passed over it, zakat becomes obligatory on it at the rate of one-quarter of a tenth, i.e., 2.5 percent. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
