The Meaning of the Hadith: There Is No Contagion and No Bad Omen

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q61: The questioner says: We hope for clarification of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
There is no ‘Adwa, no omen, no Hamah and no Safar.لا عدوى ولا طيرة، ولا هامة ولا صفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 3539
What is the type of negation in this hadith?

A61: The negation in the hadith means: prohibition, that is: do not take bad omens and do not believe in these things; rather, attach your belief to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). This is a refutation of what the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance were upon, who acted upon these things and believed in them, so this is a refutation of them,
and a negation of the falsehood they were upon. And his saying:
There is no contagionلا عدوى
, the meaning of contagion is: the transfer of disease from one person to another, or from one country to another; this is contagion, the transfer of disease from one place to another. This is a reality, and one is commanded to take precautions against it. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not bring a healthy camel to a sick oneلا يورد مصح على ممرض
and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Flee from the leper as you would flee from a lion.فر من المجذوم فرارك من الأسد
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 16:270
, you take precautions when an epidemic occurs in a country, so no one leaves it and no one enters it; to prevent contagion. But these are preventive causes, and as they say: prevention is better than cure. As for the one who transfers the disease and decrees the disease, it is Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). Contagion does not transfer by itself without the decree and will of Allah, as the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance believed:
There is no contagionلا عدوى
meaning: do not believe that contagion occurs by itself without the decree of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He). And this does not prevent taking preventive measures as we mentioned, from what the Prophet
(peace and blessings be upon him) guided to. As for bad omens; it is: taking an omen as a bad sign. They take bad omens from places, they take bad omens from birds, they take bad omens from people, they take bad omens from time and times. All of this is false; because this is a belief that other than Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) benefits or harms. So the heart is attached to Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and one does not take bad omens from birds, animals, or others. This is from the matters of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, it is associating partners with Allah. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Tatayyur is shirkالطيرة شرك
.
Nor the hama (an ill-omened bird)ولا هامة
: it is the bird known as the owl, and it used to land on ruins and the remains of buildings, so the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance believed in it that it announces death and that it indicates death. So when it lands on his wall, he says: my soul has been announced to me. So this is from the matters of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, so this is a bird that has no share in death or life and is not believed in.
and there is no Safarولا صفر
is the month of Safar, they used to take bad omens from it in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance
and they thought it was an inauspicious time, +so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) refuted that, Safar is +one of the months, and a time among times, in which there is no benefit or harm except by the decree of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He).
