The Meaning of the Hadith: (There is no 'adwa [contagion] or tiyarah [bad omen] . . )

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We return in this episode, Your Eminence the Shaykh, to a message sent to the program from Iraq, Baghdad. The sender of the message says: Your brother in Allah (R. S. S) has some questions. In one of them he says: I read in the book of Tawhid this hadith from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is no ‘Adwa, no omen, no Hamah and no Safar.لا عدوى، ولا طيرة، ولا هامة، ولا صفر
Sunan Ibn Majah 3539
They both narrated it.
The question: What does the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mean by his saying:
There is no contagionلا عدوى
, and the science of hadith has established that many diseases are transmitted by contagion, so clarify this matter for us? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
The hadith mentioned is authentic; al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated it in the two Sahihs. Muslim added:
nor na' [bad luck from the stars], nor ghul [a demon that devours the unborn]ولا نوء، ولا غول
, and he also added to the hadith:
And I like a good omenويعجبني الفأل
. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what is fal [a good omen]? He said:
A good word.الكلمة الطيبة
.
The 'adwa [contagion] that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) denied is what the people of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, the disbelievers, believe, namely that things transmit by their nature without the divine decree and destiny of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and that the transfer of scabies or leprosy from one person to another, or from one animal to another, is natural and that the divine decree has no part in it, nor does His action (Mighty and Majestic) ; and this is false. So there is no transfer from one eye to another in scabies or otherwise except by the permission of Allah ..... and His prior decree (Glorified and Exalted is He) and His wisdom (Mighty and Majestic) ; for this reason, when some of the Bedouin said: O Messenger of Allah.. when he heard
There is no contagionلا عدوى
he said: “O Messenger of Allah! When there are many camels, there may be a scabby camel among them, and they all become scabby.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
So who infected the first one?فمن أعدى الأول
meaning: Who is it that sent down the scabies to the first one? Allah is the One who sent it down for a profound wisdom, so the One who sent it down to the first one is the One who sent it down to the rest; for this reason he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A sick person should not be taken to one who is healthyلا يورد ممرض على مصح
Sahih Muslim 2221a
meaning: The owner of camels with scabies should not lead his camels to the owner of healthy camels; because this is a means for the transmission of the disease.
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Flee from the leper as you would flee from a lion.فر من المجذوم فرارك من الأسد
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 16:270
because leprosy is transmitted. This means acknowledging the transmission, but not in the way of the 'adwa [contagion] that the pre-Islamic age of ignorance speaks of, rather it is transmitted by the permission of Allah upon mixing; it may be transmitted upon mixing, if the scabby person mixes with the healthy one; and the leper may mix with the healthy one and it may be transmitted, and so may other diseases upon mixing; it may be transmitted, and it may not be transmitted; and it is not necessary, but if the healthy are kept away from the sick, that is what is better, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded. He said:
do not leadلا يورد
This is a prohibition from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
A sick person should not be taken to one who is healthyلا يورد ممرض على مصح
Sahih Muslim 2221a
, and he commanded:
Flee from the leper as you would flee from a lion.فر من المجذوم فرارك من الأسد
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 16:270
.
So the meaning is: Keep the sick away from the healthy if there is a fear of contagion from them; do not mix this with that. So this means avoiding the causes that lead to the transmission of the disease. But it should be known that there is no 'adwa [contagion] in the sense of natural transmission, and that its transmission, if it occurs, is not because it transmits by its nature, and that it is not by the permission of Allah, nor by the will of Allah. No, rather it is transmitted, but by the will of Allah and His permission and His decree (Mighty and Majestic) . No one is able to transfer anything to anything except by the permission of Allah and His decree. Not an animal, not a human, nor anything else. Everything is by divine decree and destiny. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Everything is by decree - even incapacity and abilityكل شيء بقدر حتى العجز والكيس
Muwatta Malik 46:4
, and Allah says in His great Book:
No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in a register before We bring it into beingمَا أَصَابَ مِنْ مُصِيبَةٍ فِي الأَرْضِ وَلا فِي أَنْفُسِكُمْ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ نَبْرَأَهَا
[al-Hadid: 22], and He (Exalted and Majestic is He) says:
Indeed, all things We created with predestination.إِنَّا كُلَّ شَيْءٍ خَلَقْنَاهُ بِقَدَرٍ
[al-Qamar: 49].
So the intent is that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has decreed all things: health, sickness, travel, staying, a child whether male or female, life and death .. and so on, all by past decrees from Allah (Exalted is He) . The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah ordained the measures (of quality) of the creation fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, as His Throne was upon water.إن الله قدر مقادير الخلائق قبل أن يخلق السموات والأرض بخمسين ألف سنة، وعرشه على الماء
Sahih Muslim 2653b
So all matters are decreed. So the fact that this camel becomes sick, or this horse, or this human .. is by decree. And the fact that this healthy person mixes with this sick person and is afflicted with his disease .. this is by decree, and it is not necessary. It may happen; the healthy may be with the scabby and not become scabby, and a person may be with the leper and not be afflicted with leprosy. And it was reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he took the hand of a leper while he was eating and said:
all in the name of Allah, with trust in Allahكل باسم الله، ثقة بالله
Sahih Ibn Hibban 59:8
and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not become a leper. So if a person mixes with them, it is to make it clear that Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) is the One who decrees, and so that people know that this is not by the will of 'adwa [contagion], but by the will of Allah. If he does that so that people know that these matters are by the decree of Allah, then He (Glorified and Exalted is He) is the Generous, the Bountiful, who protects and preserves him so that people know the truth that His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified.
And the summary is: that there is no 'adwa [contagion] in the way of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, meaning: there is no 'adwa [contagion] by nature, but 'adwa [contagion], which is transmission, may occur by the will of Allah and His permission due to the mixing between the sick and the healthy in some cases. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good and do you good.
