Zakah on a debt that was waived from the debtor
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 18647 )
Q5: I have a sum of money, amounting to twenty thousand riyals, which I lent to a relative. It has now been ten years and he has not repaid the debt. The original debt was thirty thousand riyals, and I forgave him ten thousand riyals. Do I have to pay zakah on the twenty thousand riyals for the past ten years, and if so, what is the amount?
A5: If the aforementioned debt is owed by a solvent person from whom you are confident of receiving it, then zakah is obligatory on it every year. If it is owed by an insolvent person from whom you are not confident of receiving it, then there is no zakah on it, unless you receive it and a year passes after you receive it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
