Zakah on money owed by another person
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 19081 )
Q1: I gave my brother a sum of 100,000 (one hundred thousand) riyals to buy and sell with for a period of four years, and he has incurred expenses on it. Is the zakah obligatory on me or on my brother, the beneficiary? I am aware that I am paying its zakah from my own money while it is in his possession.
A1: The zakah on the principal is obligatory on its owner, and your obligation is not discharged except by paying it. As for the borrower mentioned, he pays zakah on what he borrowed along with its profits, just as he does with his other zakatable wealth. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
