The second question of Fatwa No. ( 18376 )
Q2: A married woman works and earns from her work, and she gives charity to those she feels are in need of it. When her husband finds out, he refuses it and rebukes her if she does it, so she gives from her money secretly. What is the ruling? And what is the ruling if she is an unmarried daughter whose guardian is her father, and she works, and she has a specific portion of her salary from which she spends secretly without her father’s knowledge? Is there anything wrong with this, or is it obligatory for her to inform her father of it?
A2: Nothing is required of the two women mentioned regarding what they give in charity from their own money; rather, they have the reward from Allah the Exalted for that charity, and neither the husband nor the father has the right to prevent them from giving charity with their own money. However, if the husband or the father is poor, it is better that the charity be for them; due to the hadith of Zaynab, the wife of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud, (may Allah be pleased with them both), that a woman from
the Ansar asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): “Does the charity we give to our husbands and to the orphans in our care suffice for us?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan an-Nasa'i 2583Sahih (Darussalam) , and there are many hadiths in this meaning. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
