The Meaning of Abstention
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 14351 )
Q1: I would like you to clarify for us, Your Eminence, the meaning of abstention, and whether it is a recommended practice or obligatory for all Muslims, and whether it is true that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) specified its time as fifty verses before the Fajr prayer , and that scholars have currently specified it as half an hour, and what is the ruling on one who drinks or eats during the Fajr adhan? I would like an explanation of when fasting begins: is it upon hearing the adhan, half an hour before the adhan, or after the adhan ends?
A1: The intended meaning of abstention is: ceasing from eating and drinking, and the things that invalidate fasting, after the time of fasting has begun. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has clarified in His Noble Book the beginning of the time of fasting and defined it, Glorified and Exalted is He, by the rising of the dawn. He, the Exalted, said:[Al-Baqarah 2:187] , and if the mu'adhdhin calls the adhan at the rising of the dawn, that is an announcement of the rising of the dawn, so it is obligatory for you to cease from eating and drinking.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
