Obedience to the Father in Watering or Selling Qat
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q2: My father has a farm where he grows corn and qat trees, row by row, corn row and qat row. My father orders me to water the corn and the rest of the farm, but I refuse because there is qat in it; if I water the corn, the qat drinks with it. Sometimes he orders me to pick the qat so he can sell it in the market, and sometimes he orders me to sell the qat. I seek his guidance and obey him sometimes, and I explain to him the prohibition of qat, but he gets angry at me. I love my father and wish him good and want Paradise for him. I know that he prays and maintains his prayers, but the problem of qat in Yemen is a general problem. My question is: Is my action correct? If it is not correct, I ask for guidance, direction, and advice for my father; because my father may be convinced if he sees and reads the fatwa and sees my name as the one seeking the ruling, especially from the Permanent Committee, and sees and reads the signature of the Grand Mufti. I ask the scholars of virtue to advise me and my father, and the people of my village specifically, and the people of Yemen generally. I ask for supplication for my father for guidance to the truth, and may Allah reward you with the best reward for us, for Islam, and for the Muslims.
A2: It is not permissible for you to obey your father in watering the qat or selling it; because qat is forbidden, and its sale and eating its proceeds are forbidden. There is no obedience to a created being in disobedience to
the Creator; because this is cooperation in sin and aggression. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
