The Ruling on Selling Qat and Going on Hajj with the Earnings from Qat
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
A listener from Aden, the pilgrim: Hasan Dablah -it appears- our brother says in his message: I am a man who trades in selling qat and I gather some money from it, and I want to go on Hajj from the profit of qat. Is this permissible for us? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good?
Answer: Qat is forbidden, and it is not permissible to consume it, sell it, or buy it, just like tobacco. So it is obligatory for you to be cautious of that, and not to go on Hajj with it. Rather, the money you have from the price of qat, you should give it in charity to the poor and the needy, or in the causes of good. And seek another job and another good earning; because qat has many harms, as the knowledgeable scholars from the scholars of Yemen and others have mentioned. So fear Allah, my brother! And beware of this evil tree; do not drink it, do not use it, do not sell it, do not trade in it, and do not go on Hajj with its price. And so it is with tobacco, and so it is with all narcotics and intoxicants; it is obligatory to be cautious of them because of their great harm. And Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, has forbidden His servants to consume what harms them or removes their minds.
There is no doubt that tobacco and qat are two evil, harmful trees with great harm. And their user may become intoxicated at times and his mind may change. And in any case, they are harmful, even if some people deny that they intoxicate, but they are harmful, evil, and forbidden, and it is obligatory to be cautious of them, just as it is obligatory to be cautious of all intoxicants. And Allah, Exalted and Majestic is He, says: [Al-Talaq:2-3]. When you leave it for Allah, Allah will replace it for you with a better earning; because He, the Exalted, is truthful in His saying: [An-Nisa:87] [An-Nisa:122]. May Allah grant us and you steadfastness, and bestow upon us and you sincere repentance. Yes.
