Attending gatherings in which evil is manifested for the purpose of forbidding it

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 20722 )
Q4: I attend some gatherings in which Allah the Exalted is disobeyed, and I preach to the attendees while they are engaged in their evil; such as smoking and the like, until
they abandon their evil, by the praise of Allah. Is my action permissible, given that I refrain from forbidding evil at the beginning of the gathering so as not to drive them away from me?

A4: It is permissible for a Muslim to attend gatherings that contain evil with the intention of forbidding it and advising its people, but attending them for any other purpose, or participating with the sinners in their sins, is not permissible, due to the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And it has already come down to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them. Indeed Allah will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together -وَقَدْ نَـزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْكِتَابِ أَنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ آيَاتِ اللَّهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا فَلا تَقْعُدُوا مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا مِثْلُهُمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ جَامِعُ الْمُنَافِقِينَ وَالْكَافِرِينَ فِي جَهَنَّمَ جَمِيعًا
[An-Nisa 4:140]
. And due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith.من رأى منكم منكرا فليغيره بيده فإن لم يستطع فبلسانه فإن لم يستطع فبقلبه وذلك أضعف الإيمان
Sahih Muslim 49a
narrated by Muslim in ( his Sahih ). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
