Ruling on Attending Occasions That Contain What Is Wrong
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Occasions may arise where a person is required to attend a gathering, and something of what is wrong may occur in the gathering, such as smoking or the like, and he is unable to forbid it. So, should he attend?
If a person is invited to a gathering for a wedding or a regular invitation, and he knows that there is something wrong in it, then if he is able to change it, such that the invited man has status and rank among his people; then it is obligatory for him to attend,For two reasons: The first: responding to the invitation.
The second: to remove what is wrong.
As for if he knows that he is unable to change it, then it is not permissible for him to attend; because whoever attends what is wrong is like its doer.
And if he attends while not knowing that there will be something wrong there, then he sees the wrong, it is obligatory that he advise and speak. If he is heeded, that is what is required. If he is not heeded, it is obligatory for him to leave the gathering, whether those who are pleased are pleased and those who are angry are angry; because the pleasure of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) takes precedence over the pleasure of everyone.
