Health Insurance for Company Employees
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 20693 )
Q: I work for a company, and this company has entered into an agreement with certain hospitals to provide medical insurance for the company's employees. This involves the company paying the hospitals, for example, one million riyals annually, in exchange for those hospitals treating the company's employees for one year for diseases and injuries specified in the agreed-upon contract. Is it permissible for us to be treated in these hospitals under this system, or is this a form of gambling?
A: Commercial insurance—including health insurance—is forbidden in all its forms; because it involves consuming wealth unjustly, and because it contains ignorance, excessive uncertainty, and gambling. It is obligatory for the Muslim not to enter into it or use it if he is
working for a company that uses it with its employees, and he must seek treatment at his own expense. There is sufficient provision in the lawful that makes the forbidden unnecessary. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
