Q: What is the ruling on the zakah of fava beans other than Egyptian fava beans, and likewise sesame? Because we grow a lot of it, but nothing has come out of it yet. If its zakah is obligatory, do we give it as oil or what do we do, and what is the evidence for that from the Book and the Sunnah?
A: Zakah is obligatory on fava beans and sesame because they are grains that are measured and stored, provided that they reach the nisab, which is three hundred sa' by the Prophet's sa'; due to the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:267] and the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 979a agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. The wasaq is sixty sa' by the Prophet's sa'. The amount of zakah is one-tenth of what is watered without expense, such as what is watered by rainwater or rivers, and half of one-tenth of what is watered with expense, such as what is watered from wells by sprinkling or other means. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا أَنْفِقُوا مِنْ طَيِّبَاتِ مَا كَسَبْتُمْ وَمِمَّا أَخْرَجْنَا لَكُمْ مِنَ الأَرْضِNo sadaqa (zakat) is payable on less than five wasqs of (dates or grains)
