Fatwa No. ( 20261 )
Q: In recent times, there has been a lot of frequenting of the grave of Amina , the mother of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), in al-Abwa , on the pretext that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visited it. Is visiting it a recommended practice or not? Did the Companions and the righteous predecessors visit it? Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) visit it once or multiple times? We ask for a comprehensive answer, as the matter is very confusing; because some people are now frequenting it in a striking manner. May Allah guide you and benefit Islam and the Muslims through you.
A: It is known that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) only visited his mother’s grave once, and he sought permission from his Lord to seek forgiveness for her, but He did not grant him permission. It is not known of him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he repeated the visit to his mother’s grave after that, and it is not known of the Companions and the righteous predecessors, as far as we know, that they visited this grave, frequented it, or traveled to it; because traveling to visit graves is prohibited; because it is one of the means to shirk (associating partners with Allah),
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 326Sahih (Darussalam) Therefore, traveling to visit it is not permissible, just like other graves; due to the aforementioned hadith. And if seeking needs from the occupant of the grave or calling for aid to him is added to that; then this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) that expels one from the religion. So it is obligatory for the Muslims to adhere to the Sunnah and to stay away from bid'ah (religious innovation) and from shirk and its means. May Allah guide everyone to beneficial knowledge and righteous action. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
