Q: What is the view of the Islamic religion regarding circumambulating the deceased during the funeral procession, and circumambulating through all the streets of the village all the way to the cemetery? Is the circumambulation an act of the deceased or an act of the mourners? And if it is an act of the deceased, what is the evidence for that from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)? Because it has become customary in our village for some of the deceased who are known for their faith or who are renowned for their righteousness and faith to be circumambulated through all the streets of the village and the neighboring villages. This custom has become prominent among the followers of the Sufi paths. So what is the view of Islam regarding this from the Book and the Sunnah? May Allah reward you with good for us.
A : The Sunnah is to hasten with the funeral after praying over it and to take it by the shortest path to the cemetery; for what was narrated by Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib from Abu Hurayrah
(may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said:Sunan Abi Dawud 3181Sahih (Al-Albani) It is agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and this is the wording of al-Bukhari (Vol. 2, p. 88). As for circumambulating the funeral through all the roads of the city and its outskirts, this has no basis in the Book of Allah or the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). It is an innovation introduced into the religion, and it is forbidden to act upon it, even if the deceased had willed it before his death. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.

Walk quickly with a funeral, for if the dead person was good it is a good condition to which you are sending him on, but it he was otherwise it is an evil of which you are riding yourselves.
أسرعوا بالجنازة، فإن تك صالحة فخير تقدمونها إليه، وإن تك سوى ذلك فشر تضعونه عن رقابكم
