Leaving the sitting between the two prostrations
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 21439 )
Q: The imam led the people in the Fajr prayer. He prostrated in the first rak'ah, then stood up for the second rak'ah (that is, he left the sitting between the two prostrations and the second prostration). Then he began reciting al-Fatihah. He was reminded of this, so he returned directly to the second prostration (that is, he did not perform the sitting between the prostrations). He then completed the second rak'ah and prostrated for forgetfulness before the taslim. What is required of him in this situation, and is his action valid? Please inform us. May Allah reward you with good.
A: This imam left the second prostration and left the sitting between the prostrations. Thus, he left two pillars of the prayer. If one leaves a pillar or more and does not remember it until he has begun reciting in the next rak'ah, then the rak'ah from which he left the pillar is invalid, and the one following it takes its place. He completes his prayer on this basis and prostrates for forgetfulness. It is not permissible for him to return after he has begun reciting in the next rak'ah. Therefore, what this imam did of returning is not permissible. He built his prayer on a defective rak'ah, and the interval was long, so everyone must repeat the prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
