The third question of Fatwa No. ( 16863 )
Q3: If the imam makes a mistake in the prayer and adds a rak'ah, or if he intends to stand up and the ma'mums remind him, he is supposed to say the salam, then prostrate, then say the salam again. This is what we know. However, some preachers say that if a person makes a mistake and adds something to the prayer, he should say the salam once to his right, then prostrate twice, then say the salam once to his left. They cite the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not say the salam four times in one prayer. They also state that the hadith narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim contains the story of Dhu al-Yadayn , in which Abu Hurayrah said:, meaning: he said the salam to his right, then prostrated twice, then said the salam to his left. Your Eminence, there has been a great dispute among Muslims, and they do not know which way to turn because of our differences as preachers. Please inform us so that we may inform the Muslims with your fatwas. May Allah reward you?
A3: We do not know of any evidence for this method, nor of any recognized scholar who holds this view. Therefore, it is not permissible to advocate for it or spread it. The Sunnah is to say the salam twice. As for the prostration for forgetfulness, it is preferably performed before the salam, except if he said the salam due to missing a rak'ah or more, or if he proceeded based on his predominant suspicion. In these two cases, it is preferable to perform the prostration for forgetfulness after the salam, and after that, he says the salam twice.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
